im running a toploader (wide ratio) with a hayes clutch and plate. the clutch setup went in last summer and seemed to hook decent until the last couple of nights of test and tune and the car would rev way up at launch like the clutch was slipping. however there wasnt that tell-tale burn smell you usually get. i noticed some trans oil seeping at the bottom of my bell and figured maybe the clutch got contaminated. my question is do you like the spec brand clutch plate better than the hayes for a hard launching (5800-6200) car? im running and 11 inch truck style plate and heavy truck flywheel (164 tooth i think). also, have you ever run slapper bars? im looking for some old school guys who can help make an old school setup work. believe the car is capable of better than inconsistant mid 1.6's. not interested in cal-tracs and monoleafs. not because they dont work well, just because if pops made these cars hook well with 60's tech, then no reason why that legacy cant continue. plus i hate spending money and not learning anything.

I believe the clutch has gotten oil contaminated, Input seal or loose trans. colar. Hays, or Ram, or Mcleod. Adjustable for me,slip it on laungh a little & it does not pull the engine down on launch or shifts. But for street strip use 1800 # plate or less . Does not brake parts as bad. Loosen front end up some for weight transfer. I have run slapper bars, or only springs tied together like the 1965 Dodges did. Fly wheel needs to be only 25# if more its to heavy for small block. What size tires & rear end gear? My 65 falcon 289 2v carb. 7" inch slicks with 4.60's gear ran 12.80's at 98 To 100 mph in 1/4 there were no 1/8 mile times at the track I ran at, it had home made slapper bars.60 ft. were in the 1.50's most of the time, but were not consistant all the time

is the stock toploader 2.78 first gear? im going to find out what my flywheel weight is. i know its a smallblock truck flywheel because its the 164 tooth and uses an 11 inch clutch. to be honest everett, the best 60's came when i stopped using the 2-step and started launching at part throttle (around 6k) and dropping the clutch and opening the throttle simultaneously on the green light. my tires are mt et. streets 28x11.5x15 and the gears are 4.11's with a locker. dont let the tire size throw you, mt has the et's width measured as section width, the widest part of the tire. the actual tread width is 8.5, not 11.5. the front sway bar if off, 6 cyl. springs, 90/10 shocks, front end aligned and greased. if it helps, my car should run 11.7-11.9 in the 1/4 with the crappy 60ft times its getting now. if you're getting 1.50 with a high 12 car then my setup is way off. i can tell you from film and pics that when the car hooks good there is a few inches of separation between the rear tire and body, the wheels go up, left tire about 6 inches off the ground, right tire about 1 inch, then just as suddenly as it jumps up, it comes down, then it goes. if it feels ok, the rpm wont go below 5400 when the car recovers after the hit, and will pull with the tach (not spin) on up. quick cars dont seem to have this problem. the front end on mine doesnt come all the way down, but it dont carry the wheels far. thanks everett.

Yes it is a 278 unless it came out of a 70 or so & then it could be a 232, I think that the number. Toms has a gear you can change & lower first gear with out changing the cluster. I ran this for years with minium breakage. Just somthing to think about! You need to run the V8 front springs, they have more stored energy than the 6 cyl do.Cut 1 coil off. It also sounds like the rear springs are to weak, they won't hold the weight of the car, they are allowing the wheels to come back up into the body there for they are unloading the tires. If you can find a set of hipo rear springs, I think they are 5 leaves maybe 6? have them reset & only use the top 4 leaves the two main ones the eyes curl around each other at the eyes & use the next 2 leaves, leave of the bottom 1 or 2 . these are able 2 hold the weight of the car. what does the tack drop back 2 on launch, is the engine being pulled down Also?.
