I have a 70 and later c4 which is a better clutch plate? alto red eagle or raybestos blue plate. Plan on running a 10" 3000 stall with 150 shot of nitrous any suggestions?

Welcome to M&M .
Alto red with Cholee (sp?) steels that have been sand blasted. The blue glazes very easily at high RPM.

Colene I think is the correct name of the steel's. They are also available through Alto.

Actually the Kolene is spelled with a "k". Not that I want to correct anyone.
I think the reason Alex said to blast the steels is because the coating can flake off. Not good. It's best to just take it off in the beginning.
As for the Alto vs. Blue, I have run Blues with no trouble, but my new trans has Altos in it. I will be trying them out in a few weeks. By the end of the season I will know how they hold up.
As a general concenses, the Altos seem to have a better reputation.

IN my RPM range, I have found the blues to glaze after 10-15 passes Ben.
We are using a red Alto.
Thanks for correcting the spelling. I forgot.

I have heard that about the Blues before, but I have not experienced it myself.

I would be careful with the sandblasting as it would leave the steel too rough..
Here's how one of the guys on F/M does his.

The coating on the Kolene steels I was referring to if anyone else was wondering is actually some kind of a paint. I believe its applied for cosmetic reasons. You wont actually harm the Kolene coating. Its very easy to remove, it can even be done with a wire brush. Some guys bead blast them but that only aggravates the existing problem of a rough surface finish with these Kolene style steels. I would recommend spinning them in a lathe and removing it with emery paper. This will also help smooth them out a bit and get the grain going in the right direction. When you remove the black paint or sorry "Black Oxide Coating" you can see they look like they go through a time saver with the grain running across them. Ouch.

The clutches are used for the 2-3 shift where the front band is the 1-2 shift.
Hope that helps.

I went ahead and bought the bands with the kevlar coating I've been told these have a lot more holding power.
