Hi everyone, new to this board been on the others but this place is more my speed, a little bawdiness mixed in w/lot's of great ACCURATE info. I am in the planning stage of my '66 289 rebuild (while the 120"'s of snow is melting). Plan is to build up around a C90X manifold/4100 Autolite combo (already have). I am looking at the Comp Cams 31-110-3 C3OZ-6250-C that Alex has for sale.Questions are is this cam a good choice given the mani/carb combo and if so what is a decent head. Tried to find a good set of 69-70 351W but the $$$ to go thru them almost equal an aftermarket set. Found a set of '70 302's that were gone thru (bigger valves, cleaned up etc) for around $500.00 but seemed too $$$. Any advice?? This is strictly a street car, no track time. Looking for the typical low & midrange power band. Will have a T5 behind it with 3.25-3.50's outback. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to M&M, your name?, a lot of good people here. Is the C90X a 289-302 or check to see if it is a 351W?. Also, the cam kit Alex has listed is solid lifters and you don't need them. Alex is a Comp cams dealer and when you E:mail Him, he will help you decide on the best came for your engine, car, running gear combination. GT66, $500-$750 is going price for any heads with bigger valves and fresh or new work. Basic re-cond stockers run $150-175 ea. exch. Good Luck with project, contact Alex for proper cam kit you will be happpy with. Regards, Jessie Holmes, Pensacola,Fl.

Welcome to M&M ! Check with a shop in your area for costs on rebuilding your stock 289 heads or locating some 351W pieces. You'd be surprised at what the shops have lying around that customers never picked up. On a strict budget with no 351 heads available, I would just work the 289 heads. New over size valves (cheap), a bit of unshrouding, and some home match porting work wonders. Especially with flat top pistons.

Thanks for the info so far. The C90X is a "B" manifold for the 289's I have had it for quite a few years but never used it having been elbow deep in 351C's and SBC's (yes I am ashamed for having been seduced by the darkside). I know I probably don't "need" the mechanical cam but I am kinda partial to the clatter. Plus the numbers on that cam seem to be very streetable.Given the preference I assume the 351W heads are better than 289 due to larger I & E ports and naturally larger valves.....correct? If enlarging the 289 valves, how big? The 1.90/1.60 combo seems very close and tight to fit in there, maybe 1.78/1.54 would be better? If using 289 heads I assume the I&E ports would need to be opened up to match the C90X ports...correct? Alex, what are your thoughts on the Comp Cam 31-110-3 cam in this application? 4100 Autolite - 1.12 version (have the 1.08 right now) C90X-B manifold Opened up 289 heads w/1.7 roller tip rockers. (or 351W's if I can find them). Flat tops Stock bottom end re-done w/ "good" parts Tri-Y's to keep exhaust velocity up for a good low-end/mid-range. Missed anything? Thanks again for any and all input

1969 351W is the used economical head of choice. For 289 heads, GT-40 valves have been the prime choice for some 38 years. 1.84 and 1.50. 1.90 and 1.60 will work too if you can get a deal on some of those. Just gasket match ports 3/4 of and inch or so for clean up. 289 Hipo cam is great street cam for mild applications. Nice and noisy.
Yes on tri-y's. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS!
