In the March addition of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords there is an article on the new Ferrea hollow stem valves. Has anyone seen this?

Its 21% lighter then a standard 2.02 valve. The only question I would have with it is... would expanding gases in the stem causing the stem it self to expand? Not that I really know that would happen one way or another its just a possible concern.

It'd be my guess that a lightweight hollow valve wouldn't be suited for an endurance motor (street included). Probably for drag racing only, where they're only getting run for a short while

The gasses would probably not create internal pressures to expand the stem as much as they would expand if it was solid.

Well...The trick to them is this;

FORD introduced this concept on the 427 Medium Riser in the mid-sixties for NASCAR racing mainly. The intakes have a hollow stem and the exhaust have sodium filled stems (to absorb/handle) for extreme exhaust valve temperatures as the exhaust valve is much more susceptible to excess heat absorption.

This concept was carried over to the Tunnel Port and FE CJ engines.

It would only benefit racing or extreme street useage as it also lightens the valvetrain.

I am looking for information concerning factory performance/aftermarket speed parts (1958/1960) used on the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) (Also Thunderbird 59/60) Engine Series (383-410-430-462) produced from 1958 thru 1968.
