My new engine is soon to be completed. 351w 350-400hp As many of us with winter engine projects, can some of you engine experts please give a run down on what oils to use, rpm's to run at for a cam-breakin ,and engine breakin. What's on my mind is I heard to run an engine at 3500 for about 1/2 hr. That's fine if everything just fires right up. BUT, with new cam-lifters, heads, intake and carb, all on a fresh block ! What's the odds ?? of everything going that smooth at start-up? Any tips And advice would be greatly app. for quite a few of us for a long and happy summer of crusin our rides trouble-free .. The cheapest 20 wt or 10-30 detergent you can find. I like the stuff in gallon containers. Get enough for two oil changes along with two el Cheapo filters.
Run it for 30 minutes, look everything over, reset the valves and dump the oil. Replace it with your second batch and run it for an hour or 100-150 miles. Then you are ready to use whatever you like in a premium grade of lubricant.

Prime the oil pump, first and foremost! Spin it counter-clockwise.

If everything is right, it'll fire immediately. Distributor must be timed correctly, carb must have fuel in it!

I've always run a new motor in on 30w Non-Detergent motor oil. Depending on who you talk to, this is 'old school'... as others will recommend any quality manufacturer's grade oil for break-in.

You might review your camshaft literature... 3500 is awfully high for a cam run-in; I imagine it's more like 2000-2500 for 20-30 minutes.

Have a timing light hooked up and ready to go prior to cranking it for the first time. Once it fires, bring it up to the recommended rpm immediately and keep it there. I use the idle speed screw turned in for this. Then, time the distributor to 30-34* (fine tune it later). I set a big industrial fan directly in front of the car; it moves air through the radiator and clears exhaust gasses from the work area. I also have a garden hose handy; a fresh motor is 'tight' and can run on the hot side, sitting still in the driveway without at-speed airflow through the radiator dosen't help any. If the temp gets creeping up, run some water down the radiator to cool things down.

You'll be a busy guy! Watch the oil pressure & temp gauges, periodically adjust the engine speed few hundred rpm up and down (keeping it varied), watching for leaks and listening for anything bad

Before you crank it for the first time, verify your firning order, distributor rotation (counter-clockwise), double-check everything.

It'll be a glorious day

It's a lot colder in WI, than in the land of fruits and nuts. 20 wt flows a lot better in cold weather.
