We were in the middle of switching used 5.0 motors in an 89 mustang and noticed that the main seal appears to be leaking Could you guys give some quick advice on what's required to replace the rear main seal? Thanks Brian

Ok, I couldn't wait. The seal pulled right out and I pressed a new one in. No problem Thanks

Spring side points to the front. You should lube it with oil or tranny fluid before sliding it into place. The manual shows a special tool for installation and notes the seal should be placed within 5 thousandths of an inch of the block face, though I doubt many people actually measure that. In practice, getting it flush is to align it with the main cap.Dan Jones

Steve and the rest of you guys thanks for the help and the hardy welcome. This is my first Ford Car, but I've had lot's Ford Trucks. It's been hard to break the Chevy habit, but the 5 spd Mustangs are so much fun it was too hard to resist. The rear main slid in kinda easy hope it doesn't leak. I load it up with Red RTV and knocked it in flush with the block. Brian

I don't think there's any reason to put RTV on the seal. The old one I removed (the original factory part) was installed without it. Dan Jones
