When I disassembled my '87 5.0L HO engine, I noticed that some of the roller lifters were installed with the oil feed hole up, others were down. I assumed this meant orientation was unimportant. I did keep them matched to the cam lobes. However, the manual states that they must be kept in the original orientation so the wheels rotate in the same direction as they did before they were removed. Is this really necessary? I didn't think so as I know a buddy who drag races a hydraulic roller 5.0L and he uses used lifters with no regard to roller direction but he puts only a few miles on the engine each year. If need be, I have an assembled 5.0L (non-HO but roller cam) available that I could get the lifters from but they wouldn't necessarily be matched to the cam (lifter whell to lobe). FWIW, the cam shows no wear to the touch. Also, the factory manual states the pushrods are different top and bottom, with some sort of collar on one end and different ball ends. My pushrods are identical on both ends. Was this some sort of a running change? Dan Jones

never paid attention to the lifters position going in and so far never had a problem. i know it doesnt matter if they go back in their original place, its one of the perks of a roller. just check for the obvious stuff; wear, damage, tightness. those lifters are outstanding factory pieces imo. ------------------ 306, 4speed, 4.11's....best 1/8 mile 7.58 at 92mph with 1.72 60ft. is it ok to use the original lifters on a new cam? (assume in good condition) I ask b/c I have seen the lifters sell for as much or more than the cams.------------------ Triple Black 93 GT Conv.

If it's a roller cam/lifters, you can put old lifters on a new cam. By the way, Welcome to M&M Russ. We're almost neighbours. KK and myself live just outside of Hillsborough.
