looking at getting a new 110 or an 80gph unit to supply the bigger carb and mid size cubes?? they are on sale $44 for the 80 and $58 for the 110

only a $5 savings off either, but hey, it's $5

Can any expert racers out there advise on how thick the fuel supply line should be and how much "pump" I need for a given engine.

Lets say a 350hp 331stroker.

Some rough calculations I just did, show that if I have 600CFM of air at peak hp (that what my carb is rated at)
and assuming some densitys blah blah I will need only 30-40 gallons per hour of fuel assuming a pretty rich mixture.

So should an 80 gallon per hour pump be ok? Or is that 80 gallons per hour based on some nominal pressure and it wont actually flow that much when hooked up to the car? 80 seems like overkill if the engine only wants 30-40. Do I need to over-rate the pump for some reason?

Im curious because they suggest for EFI engines that a 36lb/hr injector is good enough for 400hp and thats 288lb/hr for all 8 cylinders,
or
37 gallons per hour (making some assumptions about fuel density)

All my calculations seem to suggest that 30 to 40 gallons per hour is what I need - so which mechanical pump do I need

Thanks
Phil

phil,i run 350+ hp with a carter mech pump and 5/16 stock lines. have had as big as a 800cfm double pumper on it. have had no problems so far!! (fingers crossed though!!) that is 1/8 mile only, it might give out before i got to the 1/4. never tried it.

Would the summit pumps be better than my stock pump for keeping up with the carb, or would the stock one still be allright?

if you are on a budjet, i would give the stock pump a try. i ran one for 4 years untill i put the carter on. cant really remember why i changed it then. i think i was chasing another problem and just left it on the motor.

KK runs a stock replacemant fuel pump from Advance Auto on her motor. It works fine. It works well enough on her motor to power her street car to 7.50's in the 1/8, which would be right around 12 flat in the qrtr. The car still has the factory fuel line on it also.

I don't think you need to worry about a bigger fuel pump. At least not till you make more power.

i think there is a lot of money wasted on big electric pumps and fancy expensive 1/2 in. fuel lines with earls fittings etc. if it aint broke, dont fix it.
(just my opinion, i could be wrong)

I think 5/16 lines and a good Carter mech pump is good for about 350 RWHP as long as you use jet extensions to keep the rear jets covered . I think I pushed my fuel system to the limit on my 11 sec. run, cause I could feel a little stumble around the 1000 ft. mark. If I ever decided to use real slicks, I would have to move up to 3/8" line. A tank sump or fuel cell would be a nice addition too.

The Carter street pump should be plenty for your setup. I've seen them used on larger engines than yours. Just make sure fuel is free-flowing from the tank and there shouldn't be any twists, kinks, or bad dents in the fuel lines.

dubz, i would spend the few extra bucks and go with the stronger one. you might not need it now but it wont hurt anything.

so are you saying going with the carter 120 instead of the summit 110, or the 110 over the 80 (since they are made by carter figured they would be about the same as the carter brand)

for an extra $2 i could get the carter street pump that isn't on sale that flows more. (but that would be the unpolished one)
