I'm building up my previously stock 68 coupe and need help on what size/type tires and gears to put on.

Motor was just completed. 420w dynoed at 524hp at 5400rpm, peak torque 533 @ 4600rpm.

The car will be used for street/strip, can street slicks put this torque to the ground? How do you go about figuring opitmum gears? I've searched the forums and it sounds like the largest slick I can run is 9". A buddy who is helping me has recommended 26".

Tranny is a C4 being done by a local tranmission shop, converter is being custom made from the dyno sheet I gave them. I wanted to go JPT but they were quoting $2300 with converter and I just can't spend that much. The local guy buys some of his stuff from JPT and says they are the best and if he didn't build transmissions that's what he'd put in his car.

Caltracs are in the plan, as is a detroit locker.

Thanks,
Don

As always, it depends on what you want to do.
YOU MUST! select gear size to tire diameter.

I want to be able to drive the car to the strip, but it won't be a daily driver. Not sure that answers your question. I'm hoping to be high 11's with this engine. If I have to take slicks with me and change them to hook that's not a problem, but if I can get away with dot slicks that is my preference.

Thanks,
Don

It should do way better than that, with traction. A DOT slick would be a minimum, but a drag slick would work best on the track. With that power, I don't see why you can be running high 10s or close to it.

I had convinced myself that I needed a 9" till I read Alex's reply in the rear end dilema thread. It' be cheaper for me to stick with my 8" and buy the currie center and hardened axels. Will 28 spline hardened axels hold up or is it just a matter of time till the axel breaks or the splines twist?

Trying not to be an idiot about this but it's hard to figure out where to start. I was just playing around with this calculator but wasn't sure what variables I should put in/leave out. Should you use rpm at peak torque or peak hp? For a high 11 second car what mph should the car be at?

I appreciate the advice,
Don

Thanks again,
Don

Don,

You've got a high 10 second car on your hands. Like my daughter's, it'll run mid 11's on street slicks with marginal traction. With CalTrac's, mono leaf springs, Rancho shocks, some front end mods and 10-26" slicks it will run mid/upper 10's. A 9" rear with 3.89 gears and a converter that stalls in the 4500 range will get you there. Have fun!

{I'm using 28 splined axels from Moser at 10.60 ets}

{High 11's can happen at 110+ mph on street slicks, or 120+ with no traction}

Don

Can vouch for the 8" at 10 second ets though.

Agreed! but a 4500 stall converter on the street is not very streetable. It boils down to the old premise of what do you want? a street car or a race car?
3.89 gears are good I'll agree, they give you multiple tire height selection.

I went with 4.86 in mine, and now I'm stuck running a 29 tall tire in a stock wheelwell, which doesn't work, and now I'm stuck air shockin it.
As for my opinion on 9" sections on the street, nothing beats my setup for street: a HRW center section, with a daytona retainer, a 35 spline detroit locker, with mosier 35 spline axles... this thing could run 8's and still not break.

Personally, I don't like anything over 3.80 range for hwy driving. I like my 3.50 gears. With 26" tires it cruises right where the engine is ready for blast-off and I can still run out my 140mph speedo!
