Guys, I need the benefit of your experience on rear ends.
When I slap the 372c back together and install it in the car, my rear end (8") will be the cars weak link. I am guessing/hoping that my motor will make in the 465 horse range at the flywheel. I have a 4 speed.
I already have (sitting around) a 8" detroit locker. Can I get by with the 8" if I use the Currie center section? or will it still be marginal, and I need to bite the bullet and swap in a 9".

Yup! It will hold up.
With a DL and a Currie/Strange center section you would be hard pressed to break it with 565 HP.
Just make sure to stud the pinion retainer.

Uhhh...What is " Stud the pinion retainer"?
BTW, what is the power limit for 34 year old axles?

Rather than using the stock bolts to fasten the pinion support to the case, use good quality grade 8 studs threaded into the case; the pinion support seats over the studs, and then you nut the studs.

I've been (recently) corrected on 28 spline axles and how much power they can handle... that a high 11 second car on slicks won't hurt them. I dunno... stickshifted launches

Good info. I have an 8" in my 68 and most have said I must go to a 9" in that the 28 spline axels won't hold up to the power of my new motor. Can I stick with the 8" if I go with new hardened axels?

What does a currie/strange center sell for?

My new motor on the dyno turned 526hp.
Thanks,
Don

The Currie center section goes for aroung $365 or so. Same as an aluminum 9" one.
BTW who has cheap prices on currie stuff now?
Summit seems to be not so cheap now....

8in. vrs. 9in. debate

Remember though, this sport is addictive, you may want to keep going faster! It's cheaper to only have to spend money once!

It's generally hard to break rear end parts with street tires. They normally just don't hook hard enough to break stuff like axles or gears. Slicks on the other hand is a different story.

I would be a little hesitant about putting good slicks on it and running it on a sticky track. Something might "give", and it wont be pretty.

The only street car (on street tires) I've seen that hurt a 9" was a friend's 428 powered Cobra replica. It ran in the high 11's at the strip which is pretty good on street tires and road race suspension. It took a Daytona pinion bearing support to fix his problems.

Would it be better(less expensive and just has strong) to buy that center section for my 8" rear I have now, or install a 9" ?
