I took my first step towards building a fun street stroker motor today.

A cool local guy by the name of Bill (who is a member on here) sold me a ready to build '72 302 block. over the next year or more I will be buying a crank, rods, pistons and bearings etc.. to build myself a 331 stroker.

I will need the balance work and the final honing done for me but thats a way off yet.

First thing for me to do is to be realistic about how Im going to use this thing and decide on nodular Vs Forged for the crank.

I want to run 12's with the car (never want to put a roll cage in it) and I think I will try a nodular crank first (aiming for 400hp at the crank) I know 12s are possible with less than 400hp but I want to use full street tires not slicks. the track is just for fun but the car is really a for the street/shows. Forged crank seems overkill with the great stuff people have been doing with the cast cranks like the SCAT crank. Besides I have an 8 inch rear end and a stock C4 so If I was to make enough power to break a SCAT crank It wouldnt be the only thing to suffer.

So with your help (espeically you guys with 331s and 347s) I will document the buildup on my website and you will all get to see the final result. Im giddy with excitment about it. I may need to go out to the garage and fondle the new melling oil pump and high strength drive shaft he also sold me.

Thanks to Todd (V8 Thumper) for convincing me to build my own.

Phil

The game plan Is to save money and buy a house first - work on the car second. I will probably buy a few parts from flatlander racing this year. Crank and rods and bearings.

I still have not decided on heads yet:
Something like AFR 165 or 185 or pro topline 180.

im still excited about this but its going to be a long term thing. I will keep you up to date!

Great news Phil!
That block... isn't that the one we were talking about a while back? COOL

With precision machine work and balancing, those Scat cast cranks are good for 600+ horsepower at spooky rpms; we'll never break one N/A in a street/strip application.

Go ahead and fondle some motor parts... IT'S NATURAL

Once again, great news and many congrats. Any assistance you need, drop me an email and I'd be happy to help out in any way I can

I did just install a roll bar, and do intend on running 11's. 6800-7000 rpm shifts; the crank is the last thing I'm concerned about

Yes todd, its the one you pointed me to that was local here in Lafayette. 72 block, all the machining done already except for a final honing. So its all your fault!

Worked through my finances again yesterday, it looks like if im careful this year i might have the money to build it AND save up for a house. All depends on my wife getting a job!
