It seems to cost quite a bit more to build a 408, so is it worth the money vs a 393? how much more hp & torque -approx-, is a 408 over a 393? if its only something like 20 horses I wouldnt waste my cash, if its more, I would consider it. How about longevity on a 408? same thing?(if balanced correctly etc)

Not sure about HP totals or longevity differences, but I remember reading an article in an old Super Ford mag that talked about strokers. It claimed that for every inch you added by stroking a motor, you added roughly 1 ft lb of torque. So in torque capability, with 2 identically prepped motors (and how often does anyone build 2 motors of different sizes then set them up identically?), you are probably looking at 15 ft lbs of torque difference. That's a substantial amount, but not enough difference that a slightly different combo couldn't overcome. Personally, I like the 393 build the best. It seems the "easier" build of the 2.

Kell,The 393 is cheaper only if you use stock 5.0 pistons and stock 351w rods. If you build the 393 and 408 with the same quality parts the cost is very close. Nothing beats cubic inches dollar for dollar. But to make h.p. you'll need good bottom end parts that can handle the rpms with the longer stroke. So.... Good parts with either stroker and the costs will be similar but the results will be slightly better with the 408w. SteveW

Isn?t it that if you go with the 393 with the stock size rods you will not have to do any cutting to get clearance?

I should look into the price of a 408w too. Can a 408w block be rebored again and rebuilt again ? ------------------ SCOOP 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics [This message has been edited by Fastymz (edited 12-27-2003).]

Yes a 408w will need more block clearancing than a 393w, but that doesn't cost anything but time. Ron, a 408w is only .030" overbored, so yes it can be bored again later. It's the stroke that is longer due to the custom crank, just like the smaller strokers. But if you go to a 408w you should be looking for Vic Jr heads and a Vic Jr intake topped with a 750-850 carb.
