As I've found out from posting in the past, the FMX transmission is not a performance transmission. However I would rather have the original transmission in the car for the sake of originality. My question then is, will the FMX be able to handle a healthy 400hp 351W? Also, will I be losing a ton of horsepower throught he driveline in going with the FMX? If so, I may think about converting to a C4. I know the FMX like the C6 is a power pig but is there really a significant amount of effeciency to be gained in going with C4? Thanks

Paul

If you are looking for all performance, go with the C4. If you are just cruzing around on the streets, you probably won't feel much difference between the 2. I think the FMX can be built to handle 400hp, but personally I wouldn't spend much money on it. The C4 is a much better trans. It really shines on the track were you will see quicker ETs.

BTW, the FMX is cast iron. Very heavy. C4 is light aluminum. It would probably drop about 50LBs of of the total car weight.

My recently rebuilt FMX lasted less than a month behind my 351C. Take it out and store it for later use.

The FMX was used because it was in between the strength of the C4s and the C6. Ford needed a transmission to take the torque of the 351W and they didn't feel the C4 could take it. The FMX in my Sprint has taken many years of neutral drops and is ready for more.

I'm going to just see how well it holds up I guess. This will be a street car anyway. If it breaks, it breaks, theres no way I'm putting money into something that might break anyway.
However, I have done alot of reading on the FMX and adding to what Steve said, the FMX seems to be a stout tranny. Many guys stand by it saying it has served them well in their applications. No there isn't much of an aftermarket for it, but I am thinking this tranny should be able to take a fair amount of abuse in its heavy duty nature. Anyone else have any experience to share, or articles to read on the FMX? It is really hard to find info out ther on it, anything is helpful, thanks.

Mine lasted for years (still alive) under a nitroused 351C. It all depends on the quality of the rebuild. The FMX has larger surface area clutches than the C4 and can EASILY take 700+HP. Ask the PROs who raced them for years.
As far as power robbing characteristics? Well the C4 should be less but a I wouldn't switch to the C4.

BTW, the AOD is based on the FMX. Have you seen what can be put in front of an AOD these days? Can you say 1200HP (with mods)?

Thanks for the info that is very encouraging

I did some more reading and I am finding out that the FMX will be plenty strong. I want to keep the original tranny anyway, and since this is not a strip car I don't think I need a C4. I'll just see how everything works out.
