Well, here's the deal. Pulled the motor on my 71 Cougar this Saturday, swapped the heads and valvetrain over to a low mile 72 351-2V shortblock. Was checking over the cam and noticed an odd looking lobe, checked out the corresponding lifter and it's toast. So, I need a new cam. so much for the quick-n-cheap fix I had in mind. Now, I can't make up my mind.

The car had a 280H Comp Cam in it. Was a fairly healthy street cam, 230 @ .050", .530" lift.

So, I'm looking for thoughts on options on a better cam. I'll be buyin in the next two days, need to get this car running asap.

Setup is: 71 351C-4V (@ 10.5 comp), stock intake and 750 Holley carb, 1 3/4" Hooker headers, 2.78 toploader, 3.25 (soon to be 3.91) rear gears.

I don't want to be buying new valve springs or machining the heads. I'm not sure of the max-lift a stock 4V head will take. If you know offhand, so tell. I just bolted the heads on, they are staying on. No mechanical cams, this is a non-adjustable motor.

What are your goals with the car? I thought you were making a cruiser out of it, but judging by the future 3.91s, I guess not.

Comp lists a solid "speciality" cam in the back of the catalog that I am looking at. It is a 270S-8 Part 32-550-5
single pattern 237 @ .050, .570 lift, 108LC.
BTW check your lifter bore to make sure the lifter will rotate correctly and not wipe out your next cam.
Oh, Sorry I noticed that you said that you are sticking with non-adjustable valvetrain.
That really limits your choices. I would just stay with what you had. Any larger cam might require an a djustable valvetrain....

Steve: the 3.91's are not really a "steep" gear as far as I'm concerned. Most guys start biting nails at 3.50's, you need to get up to 4.56's before it starts bothering me. Besides. I'm running 27" tall rear tires, so it'll take some of the "gear" out of it. I can always put the 3.25's back in for trips. Also, don't want to limit any of the suggestions because of the gear.
