I got my used gear set in the mail today, pinion gear is huge, ring gear is tiny wondering if i was sent some bogus partsgears are supposed to be for a 9" with a 3.55 ratio, but the ring gear only measures 8" in diameter at the back. That's not right is it?

Count the number of ring gear teeth, and divide by the number of pinion gear teeth. That will tell you the ratio. I just measured a 3.25 ring gear, and the machined flange surface (backside) measures 8 3/8" across, the gear side measures 9" to the outter most edges of the gears. Hope this helps ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

Well i got the set used, and he had counted the teeth to tell me what ratio it was.the front of the gear doesn't quite measure 9" (more like 8 3/4) would the 3.55 gear just be an oddball?? most companys only make 3.50 (which is what made me suspicious) both have FoMoCo logo on them markings on ring gear U.S.A. Actually some gearsets in the Ford nine inch weren't quite 9 inches. The lower right caption discussing the rear end tags in this article http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2002/02/nineinch/index3.shtml confirms this, as the the 3.50 gear out of a 9 inch Bronco rear only measures 8 3/4. So you have nothing to worry about. Paul ------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX

3.55 is a ratio used in the 8" and 8.8" rears. 3.50 is what was used in 9" rears. I'd double check the thing if it calculates out to 3.55It might be an 8.8 Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

Richmond makes 3.55 gears for 9" but these both have FoMoCo stamped in them i thought it was odd as wellthe 8.8 doesn't have the front pinion support like the 9 does it? looks like a 9" pinion gear, and the two seem to mesh allright when i hold them in my hands
