That's the minimum tappet diameter. The larger the lifter diameter, the more aggressive the cam can be made without the lifter attempting to 'dig' into it. Some race cams are so aggressive they can only be used with large diameter lifters.
The 'magnum' solid lifter lobes will have the same spec. The 270S lobe measures 224 @ 0.050", the 282S measures 236 @ 0.050", and the 294S measures 248 @ 0.050".
The cam in my 302 has the 282S intake lobe and the 294S exhaust... ground on a 110 degree lobe seperation. It uses 1.7 rockers on the intake for around 0.560" gross lift intake and exhaust. The lash is set to a tight 0.017" intake and 0.020" exhaust. It's a great nitrous cam for 4000-6800 rpm use, yet still pulls without bucking from 1800 rpm with a victor jr, and makes enough power off the bottle to push the 3300lb car to 11 second et's off the bottle on pump gas. That cam has been in the engine for quite a few years, and still looks good.
I'd use less exhaust duration for a n/a application. I'd also tighten the lobe seperation a bit and maybe go up a couple degrees on the intake duration.
The next cam (for use with the aluminum heads) will measure 242/254 @ 0.050". It comes from Comp's 'tight lash' series of lobes. (I purchased it before they came out with the Xtreme Energy grinds)
Good Luck!
