Hi ,

i asked a qeustion about my Stang a little while ago, it was continuisly backfiring and i couldn't get it right, everything seemed to be right, timing, advanced timing. sparkplugs/wires. and such.....(it all started when i putted on a set of world windsor jr heads..)

Now the problem was the Holley carb(600cfm vac sec.)!!!! . The electric choke was being put on by the carb everytime i touched the gas.., so i ripped i off.... car ran better right after that...

but when i floored it ... BANG....a intake backfire and the engine went silent....@#$%, we've try-ed every setting again and again on the carb, ignition. everything....believe me..
After trying for 2 days , my headache was at its peak .. i toke a expensive guess and bought an Edelbrock carb...1404. bolted it on.....all my problems were gone.... the thing ripped up the Street!!!!!!!

now my question is. I have my doubts about the Holley, i bought it brandnew (part no 80457-S 4160 600cfm vac sec.) so this thing must work?????right???

do you guys know what kind of jetsetting i have to put in, my guess is that (after reading a lot about Holley's ) the jets are not right.. so i want to try it out... the engine is about "breaked in" so i can take the revs up a bit... and my Edlbrock 500 is gonna be short of breath i guess.

here's the engine layout..

302 bored 0.030 over. balanced. Speedpro pistons 9.5 comp.Crane Rollers rockers, Ford Motorsports hydr.flat tappet camshaft 6250-a312 Advertised duration: 290 intake/300 exhaust
Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 214 intake/224 exhaust
Gross valve lift: .472 in. intake/.496 in. exhaust
Lobe separation: 107 degrees intake/117 degress exhaust
Peak horsepower rpm: 5,000
Peak torque rpm: 3,500
RPM range: 3,000-6,500, World windsor jr Heads 1.94/1.60 valves.Mallory unilite ign. 9mm FMS plug wires, Weiand Stealth intake .

if theres anyone who knowes an correct jetsetting , please let me know, just for the "fun" ,i want to try this carb out...and have some value for my money!!

cheers

Ben

I only taking a guess here. But it sounds like a vacuum leak. Maybe a bad carb to intake gasket. I'd change the secondary spring to one thats more heavy. As for the front jets I'd start with 65-67 jets. I'd pull the bowls make sure it's all clean inside. Then reinstall it being careful not to over tighten it. Use a new intake to carb gasket. Make sure the choke is open all the way.

Hi Scoop,

that was indeed an thought of mine also... but we've checked the darn thing thoroughly...but maybe not enough
maybe an unflat bottom surface???

the choke has been removed now, i will set the jets to your specs and try again..

i anyone has more ideas.. please say so..

Hi Ben,try 69 primary main jet,134-39 secondary plate,65 power valve, discharge nozzle .031 and a black spring for the vacuum secondaries.
Scoop is absolutely right, use new gaskets only when you put it together.
A back fire can destroy the power valve unless the carb has"power valve blow-out protection".
Good Luck

Hans
I almost forgot, black is the most heavy spring in the kit.

Ben get a new power valve anyways they are cheap and easy to install. It'll rule it out too.

Sounds like the wrong power valve in the Holley. Holley also supplied the wrong power valve in some of their rebuild kits as well. The power valve wouldn't open soon enought and cause a lean condition.
