A friend is struggling to find a complete 9 inch axle for his Mustang which will have a warm 460 soon. In the past, I have 'made' a 9 inch using a 9 inch case with the original 8 inch ends welded on to take the original 8 inch shafts so the length is the same overall. Obviously the diff is all 9 inch (28 spline) so the 8 inch 28 spline shafts fit with no machining. This was in a Mustang with a 351W and nitrous/slicks and gave no trouble but I am wondering if the shafts will take the gaff of a 460, or are they the same strength as original 9 inch 28 spline shafts? This axle will not be using 'drag' type gears so the shafts will not 'see' as much torque as say 4.11's. Probably be 2.75's or 3.00's. Any ideas? Cheers, Martin.

Martin,I think that will work for your friends warm 460 w/ street gearing. The 8" axle is equal to the 9" 28 spline axle. SteveW

I would say they would hold up if they are using that high of a gear, there isn't alot of torque that the axles see with that rationow with a 3.70 or so it would be iffy

Thanks for the replies, it's about what I thought (and hoped). Even with the tall gears the car should still run well in the 12's which should be plenty for a novice (only has 302 now). Thanks. Cheers, Martin.
