Main thing to consider is that a NEW set of Motive street gears only costs about $130.
Sure is a lot of work down the drain if the used gears don't set up correctly. Just don't ask how I know this.

I would think they would either fail immediately or not at all. Too much of a risk for me for 80.00 difference. Then again I just replaced a clutch with 500 miles on it when I re-did my engine. I don't put used clutches or gears in cars.

not good news to hear. the $80 dif since i am in Canada is over $100, so that's why i thought it would be a big savings

Dubz I have change a lot of reargears and used several sets of used gears BUT... I only change used gears when I pull them and check the back lash and pinion gear depth and set them at the same as they were running befor. also STAY AWAY FROM RICHMOND GEARS The last 2 389 8" sets that I bult howled like Banshees. Pulled them and installed Motive Gears and no problem. Richmond denied warrentee.

If it helps at all, I have used 'pre-loved' gears in a few cars and never had a problem, despite many thousands of street miles, laps of racetracks and very low 11 second passes in a 3700 lb car. The main thing to do is just give the gears a very close visual inpection, looking for wear, grooves or any sign of the surface hardening having gone. I have even used gears with bits of teeth broken off (not on load bearing areas) with no ill effects. Parts are pricey here in the UK so it helps to be able to use part-worn stuff. Hey, my '69 Mustang racer is built almost entirely out of parts that came off other people's cars (show stuff) and was being chucked. Only real money went into the engine/trans/suspension/brakes/wheels/tyres. Keep it cheap! HTH
Cheers, Martin.

A set of Richmond 3.50 gears, prperly set up and broken in only lasted 2000 miles before the howling began, by the time I pulled it the gear was shaving metal all through the housing. Warranty was denied.

My friend ignored my warning and just installed a set of 3.73 Richmond gears in his Camaro. Guess what?

Richmond definitely is having problems.

Did Holley buyout Richmond too? Sounds like it with all the problems they are now having. Maybe Zoom bought out Richmond.
The last set of Richmond gears I bought for my street car was several years ago, and they are still as quiet as the factory gears were, and they have a lot of miles, and a lot of passes down the drag strip on them. My racecar is too loud to tell if the Richmond gears in it howl or not.

I do have one set of US Strange gears that set up real nice and never howled. I don't think they are as expensive as Richmond's. But, again, that was several years ago when I bought them.

Maybe they discovered the joy and higher profits of China manufacturing?

I have a set of Richmonds, about 3 years old and a bunch of passes. It's in a 9 inch N case, w spool, and aluminum roller bearing pinion support. Never given me any problems thus far.

So these used original ford gears will probably be as safe as Richmonds or safer
