28's will probably do for now, but if i'm going to get a limited slip or some sort of locker i'd like to only buy one, not one now and one when i upgrade to 31's (which is what i though i had uptil i was told about the 2 hole axles possibly being 28s)what would i need to do to the housing to allow me to run 31's?? pretty much straight swap, pull out one, toss in the other or what is involved

I believe the case assemblies are the same for both 28 and 31 spline, it's just a matter of finding a 31 spline locker setup to match the axles.I said to myself "self!" (takin from emeril) If I'm gonna spend the money to get new axles, gears, the whole salami, why not up it to 35 spline, so that is what I did. Just have to find a big bearing case is all. mine cost about $250 (HRW), but that was over 8 years ago.

I got a '72 Gran Torino Sport, Q code 351C "CJ". It has the 2 drilled holes in the axles, and a friend at a Ford Dealer said "CJ's", according to the parts books have 31 splines. Guess what, pulled mine last weekend, and only counted 28. Now I'm looking for a pair of 31's, any suggestions?------------------ Joe

anywhere i could get 31 spline for cheaper than the new moser that is gonna cost the same for 28,31,33,and 35 splineguess i'll need to buy a locker for any upgrade since i don't have one now anyway.

72 Torinos only came with 28 spline axles. You can get 31 spline axles that will work from a 1972 T-Bird. Of course the T-Birds came 28 or 31 spline and have two different axle bearing sizes of which you will need to match, but it is a cheaper way to get 31 spline axle than buying new.

My torino is a 74, and they came with both i think. But my car is also a Gran Torino which i havn't found out if it makes a difference as to which axle i would have. I would think if they thought i needed a C6 that i would have a 31 spline rear, but you never knowJust gonna have to count before i buy a new gear setup kit [This message has been edited by Dubz (edited 11-12-2003).]

You might also have to keep in mind if the wheel bolt patterns are the same. Like 4.5", 5" or 5.5"That is of course when you?re swapping axles! [This message has been edited by 68 S-code GT (edited 11-13-2003).]
