What would cause my headers to glow a dim red while holding the RPMs at around 3000 in the dark ?
I`ve always figured that it could happen from incorrect timing , or way lean mixture.
The engine is a 9.3:1 308 which has the timing locked out at 35 degrees ...so Im thinking my carbs need some serious fattening up? What do you guys think?

I had the same thing happen this summer when breaking in my cam on my new motor at night. The whole damn exhaust seemed to glow red, especially the headers. I figured I didn't have enough timing dialed in upon initial start-up. I think with the car sitting idle at 3000 rpm's with no air flow they may glow anyway.

Actually, if you've got a big cam and you're running the motor during break-in at relatively low rpm, it can actually cherry the headers from being rich. Because of the timing of the big cam (I think it's the overlap) the fuel is still burning out into the header, makin' them real red!

The engine is already broken in,I was looking for possible voltage leaks in the plug wires when I discovered the header glow.
My cam isnt very radical ,its a hydrolic roller 542/542 224/224 @ .050 .

I'd still bet it's simply burning the fuel into the headers. 3000RPM and no-load?

It probably doesn't indicate a problem and I doubt it's anything to worry about.

Tweaking the idle mixture would probably have an affect on how red the headers get, but if you're tuning for WOT performance I don't think this condition means anything.

What is the temp of the exhaust gas exiting the port?
What is the thickness of the header material?
Put headers on a bone stock 289, pipes glowed red a night.

In subdued light, 900 degrees is a dull red.
Certinaly the exhaust is hotter than 900 coming out of the ports. It's not a problem. Think of what they would look like at 6000 if you could see them then.

I had the same problem with the headers on my 351W in my 65.Pulled the plugs thinking lean. When I checked them they were actually rich.Motor had just been gone through.Everything new.I am running a Speed Demon carb,Air Gap intake,Rpm heads,Rpm cam,10;1 forged pistons,1.7 roller rockers, hedman ceramic headers.Called Barry Grant and was told that the gas was burning outside the head.Suggested raising timing and dropping the 4 corner idle screws.Installed new plugs raised timing to 16 degrees at idle and plugs were fine.Headers look fine now also.On the warranty card with the new headers it said not to install the new ceramic coated headers on a new motor.Hedman said to install an old set until break in of new engine.A 351W in a 65 is pretty damn tight.I had done installed them and been running the motor when I read it on the warranty card.Look at your plugs and keep a check on them until you get the correct color. If the plugs are fine I wouldn't worry about the dim red headers.GOOD LUCK

The engine has about 1,800 miles on it.The plugs have been in it for about 300 miles of driving around town and me running it up thru the gears full blast (6000+ rpm)
They are white like brand new on the porcelin and the top thread (ring) on them are black and will rub off the black on your thumb if you rub hard. The ground straps are a light grey all the way to where they connect to the plug body. And as I said the timing is locked out at 35.
