Planning to stroke the 351W in my '70and have been reading some of the 351 stroknig threads here, and I still have some questions. I have seen strokers of 393, 408, and 427...for a car that's driven on nweekends, and hard, might see some track use, what is my best bet? I've heard that 427 can be too much and won't last long (I don't want to replace the motor all the time). But I've heard 393 takes nothing more special than just the crank. Can somebody give me some help? This is going in my '70 SportsRoof, auto trans.

Gary I'm no expert but I alwasy seem to have an opinion.
My vote is for the 393,it would be plenty fo motor for a street strip car.The shop helping me out told me they could get an easy 450hp and tons of low end torque out of a 393. And it will hold good too.
They did say that a roller cam would be a nice add on for a car thats taken on trips out of town. All it takes is money, sounds so easy.

I'm running a 393 in my '69 Mach 1. I couldn't be happier with the motor. It's very streetable, tons of torque and when I uncap my cutouts and bolt on my Hoosier DOT slicks it runs 11.54@116mph at the track, driving there and back. I'm not even running a roller cam. It's just a crank change, to 3.85" stroke. The best part is that the hp peak on my setup is at only 5600 rpm so you don't have to run crazy rpm's to get the power.

69redmach1 ,sounds like you`ve got the combo I`m looking for! If you don`t mind, would you give us a detailed rundown of your engine combo? So far the only parts I have is a set of Victor jr. heads ,scorpion rockers and a Stock "d4" casting 351w shortblock that I`ll be using for the build up.

I've been running a 428W (yikes!) since '97 with no issues. The motor just went through a complete teardown and it looks new (rotating assy). In fact it's for sale.

This combo is a 4.20" stroke cast factory crank with H-beam Eagle rods and Probe pistons.

With the heads you have you would be in the mid 500's with a decent small cam.

I ran a 230/238 Hyd Roller, VJ manifold. Got 12" vacuum and 500+ lb/ft of torque (FW) throughout the RPM operation of the motor. The torque dropped off above 5000 because I used some wimpy heads but it made for a killer-fun street motor.

I'll 3rd the request to get the details on your 393 and how it is bult up, Pete. I'm looking to keep the car streetable, but still kick some Brand X booty now and then . Sounds like your combo might be it...BTW, what kind of trans do you have behind that 393?

Bang per buck has to go to the 393.Lots of bottm end ,nice flat power curve. No need for high stall speeds. and the best part is you can tell the chevy guys its a 302.

Ok, here's my setup:
I bought a 393 stroker short block from Golen Engines with cam installed and timing chain, oil pump for $3500 and added my parts:
Scat 3.85" steel crank
forged rods (don't remember brand)
forged pistons 11:1 compression
Comp cams XE274 hyd. cam .519/.523 230/234
windage tray
Miloden 7 qt pan
Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads w/ loc-wire receivers
roller rockers
Victor Jr. intake
Speed Demon 750 cfm mech sec carb
MSD dist, 6AL box w/ variable timing control
Hooker headers (cheapies)
C4 tranny w/ all needle bearings and 6 clutches built to race by Broader Performance (only $800)
9" rear w/ 4.10 gears and Detroit Locker
I dynoed this car w/ a Performer RPM intake and ran 110 race fuel, my peak hp at the wheels was 370hp but with only 10deg initial and 31 total of timing. I can run 93 octane at that setting and get no detonation. I run at the track now on pump gas and get those e.t.'s My best pass with the Performer RPM intake was 11.75 @115mph and with the Victor Jr was 11.54@116mph. I've got speeds as high as 117.66 but with 11.60 e.t.'s I'm also running the TCI street fighter converter which I think is around 3200rpm stall. It's awesome on the street with the Victor Jr intake, feels like the same power band as my '03 Z06 Vette. My best 60' time with this setup is 1.61 sec and my car weighs 3570lbs w/ me in the car, not light! You could probably run lower compression but I wanted to run the ragged edge as I like to race a lot and 110 oct. is readily available. I don't need it, though, but my car seems to run more consistent at the track with it. On the street I can't tell the difference.

Man ,thats awesome! I`m really suprised at how "small" the cam is ...I would have thought it would be more like 550/560 lift and 240/250 [email protected]. I cant wait to start ordering parts for mine.

Thanks for posting your build up, I thought you'd be running a bigger cam too.

Hey Pete,

Sounds nice, do you know what pistons and what year block you have?
