pop is wanting to do a 347 stroker next year for his 76 f-150. this week he started to have transmission problems with his current c-5. to be honest i dont know what to tell him would be best. he could have his c-5 rebuilt by a couple of performance shops locally and get a quality job or he could mail order a nice c-4 from P/A or someplace like that. i know the c-4 and c-5 are closely related but i dont know which would be a better choice for reliability since ive heard the c-5 was build as a "truck trans." we want reliability since it will be behind a fairly stout 347 stroker and pulling a heavy pickup. the only thing i have against the trans he has now is the funky way the filler tube connects to the side of the pan. c-6 is not an option. any advice would be appreciated since i dont know crap about automatics. if it goes beyond a shift kit, converter, cooler, or filter/modulator change im lost. if he kept the c-5 i havent seen any performance upgrades for that trans, and if he got a c-4 how much stuff would have to be altered to make it work?

Best I remember, the C5 is basically a C4 with the lockup converter, and a few minor internal differences. C5's were used in Mustangs and T-Birds...my '86 Mustang LX had a 3.8 V6 and had a C5 in it. Looked just liked the '79 C4 in my '46 pickup, main thing i noticed was the C5 was metric (stamped right on pan). If I had a choice, I'd go with a performance built C4 instead of the C5.

That is something new. I have never seen a C4/C5 with metric stamped on the pan.

One external difference I have noticed is the later model C4/C5 use 3/8" cooler lines verses 5/16" for earlier models. A C5 with lockup VB can be changed to a non-lockup VB with non-locking convertor. Some cars came with similar cases but not lockup VB, such as the 80-84 Rangers.

And Ford helped make this difficult as the C5 with lockup in most cases is the Small Case transmission (case fill). The ones most refer to as being C5 is the pan fill model and they got this designation via the casting number starting with C5. Confused yet?

just enough to think maybe a c4 would be a better choice. im not a big fan of funky converters. the only big worry i have is if the c-4 can take the punishment of being between a built 347 and a full size truck?

I know the trans in my '68 is a pan-fill that has the larger bolt circle for the bellhousing seperate from the pump's bolts. I was always told these were C5's, which is supposed to be a heavy duty version of the C4. With the big bell I had to run a special converter with a longer snout. A conventional C4 converter wouldn't work. However, I discovered that you can bolt the regular C4 bell onto the C5(it just bolts onto the pump bolt pattern.) Once you bolt the C4 housing on, it will accept regular C4 converters. This is the way I ran the car as that C5 converter turned out to be a POS.

BTW the C5's I have came out of early '80's F150's
