I currently have a 8" open rear in my car and would like to upgrade to a 9" locked 31 spline. My 68 has a 59.25" length axel.

It looks like there were many more cars made with the 9" in the 57.25" or 58" length. If there any disadvantage to going with a shorter axel? I'm a rookie but it seems going shorter would allow me to run a wheel with less back space. Tips/advice on the swap are appreciated.

thanks,
don

Don, I remember reading in one of the car mags that the shorter axle was preferred. It allowed stuffing a wider tire inside the wheel well without having to worry about offset. The spring perches should be exactly the same, but the driveshaft may need to be shortened. Good luck on your endevour and welcome to the website. Charlie

Thanks! I've found one junkyard that has 9" out of a 66 but haven't gone to check it out yet. The junkyard in my town has a 77 granada with a 9" rear end. Didn't have a tape measuer so couldn't check the distance on the spring perch mounts. I found a web-site that says 77-81 granadas had 58" length axels. What accounts for the drive shaft length difference on the upgrade?

My goal is to find a used axel that needs the least modifications so I can purchase new gears and a locker. I blew the upgrade budget on the motor and now need to be a bit prudent on tranny/tc/rear end.
