now im getting close to firing up the new 408w, its been a long time coming i'll tell you, many delays, hope to get it running shortly, my engine builder says im at about 475 flywheel with what i have, he would of liked me to use alum heads and bigger cam, but my speed shop ower and i did it on the desktop 2000 before i did the motor over again, the speedshop owner didnt want me using alum heads on a smallblock ford because of not enough head bolts, i question him many times but talked me out of it, so here's the new combo as it stands, same block sportsman all machined lined bored etc!, new roush 200 heads ported [email protected] lift,179.2 on the .ex,67.5 chambers, 9.8.1 comp ratio for use of pump gas, dont need to spend $4 dollars a gallon for race fuel,1.6 rockers, comp cam hy roller with 288-293-236-242-555-576-108, vic jr manifold, 750HP, 1\3\4 hookers, 7qt oil pan, msd billet dist, carter mech fuel pump high volume, many more mods on the mach1 5\8 fuel line with sump under tank, new JPT 10'' converter which will light up those 275-60-15 firestones with ease, eletric fan, JPT c-4 full manual, alum driveshaft, now i think im going to need real good brakes on this thing, old motor made 400 horse at flywheel with almost 400 ft lbs@ 3100, it was pretty quick then with lots of bad things in that old motor as i found out, sorry for the long post, cant wait to dyno this new motor, hope it doesnt dissapoint.

Sounds like a great motor to me. I'd like know how it runs and what times you get from it. Iron heads need less bolts to hold them to the block ? Those roller cams sure do have some agressive grinds.

I think the speedshop owner is worrying about nothing with the aluminum heads. A lot of people use them and have zero problems with them, even if Fords don't have enough bolts holding them on. One plus of the aluminum heads is you could have run more compression on the same octane fuel without detonation. It sounds like it should be a good combo though. The heads are a little small, but it should still make good power.

im not even gonna guess the hp. just one thing jumps out at me is your machinist talking you out of aluminum heads because of the lack of head bolts....people like this need a good choking. sick of hearing the old foogey bs about how much better iron heads are and now its about head bolts. tell him to get out from under his bed and go to an NMRA or outlaw or hell....any event and look at all those crappy blown/turbo/sprayed ford smallblocks with aluminum heads and their timeslips and power #'s.....then he can spend all day looking for the pile of blown head gaskets and warped heads. puhleeez! tell him to go build his own motor and stop trying to build everybody elses. anyway, good luck.------------------ 306, 4speed, 4.11's....best 1/8 mile 7.58 at 92mph with 1.72 60ft. I beleive you engine builder too. Some where in the high 400s. Could have been low 500's with Vic Jrs But, they'll be better in your cold weather street driving conditions. SteveW

Sounds like a pretty good combo. I think that 4 head bolt story is an old story conjured up by some Chebby dirt track racer I used to here about that all the time. "You can't put alot of compression in a Ford 'cause it only has 4 head bolts". Granted the chebby motors have 1 more head bolt, but they're alot smaller diameter too! (compared to the 351's). I've never used nothing but stock used head bolts, double-stacked head gaskets, 13:1 compression or so, and never had a head gasket problem whatsoever. thanks guys, maybe nexk time i take this motor apart, it might be soon if i dont make good power and install good set of high flowing alum heads, but as steve says i live in nj and it can get pretty cold in the winter, even the spring sucked this yr, so cast iron will have to do for now, they do make more power im told, keeps in the heat for better combustion, i'll keep in touch when i fire it up, hope soon before the snow starts falling.

I think the warpage tale got spread around when aluminum technology was pretty much in its infancy, as a lot of hit and miss metallurgy technology was tried back then. Alloys are so much better now and those problems have been remedied, but those old wives tales still persist! Those same old tales are still being spread in the likes of things such as firearms etc. by some old hanger ons...yet the more knowledgeable metallurgists know better. ...Best, Chris's husband.
