Hi - Looking for a good starting point - Engine is a 347, steel crank and H rods, forged 10.6, solid roller comp cams, flowed 1970 windsors with oversized valves, 1.6 roller rockers, 4150 650, hooker, etc - wide ratio top loader, 4:11s Trac Lock - etc Running a MSD centrifical only and 6AL - Currently distributor is set with the factory curves on the MSD - slowest advance and limited total, but the car seems to do good with this setting - was looking for any advice on what this engine should run for a total - 35? 40? and at what RPM should the total be in? - Engine builder says it will spin to 7500 redline and a recommended shift at 7000 - Seems to me the factory MSD setting would be too slow on the advance and not enough total! I've read a number of articles on setting initial timing buy ear, ie set initial timing for highest RPM at idle by ear (or vacuum) which should help compensate for the current octane of the fuel in the tank? Any thoughts would be appreciated - Thanks again -

Bill,Try 15 initial and 35 total in by 3,000 rpm for starters. If it pings then back it off a bit. Considering your compression ratio, the 4 speed and pump gas. Good luck, SteveW

Thanks, I'll try those settings - no evidence of pinging so far, but the factory settings aren't very agressive - When I try setting the initial by ear, the rpm peaks for quite a bit before falling off and getting obviously rough - I'll try 15 to start and replace the springs for another 20 all in buy 3K - Thanks -

You're welcome Bill,If this isn't a street car I would lock it out at 35. I love locked out timing for everything but the tow truck. SteveW

I would love to but it does see the street - going to try to take it out next week - Looking forward to it - last time I ran was 1967 at Dothan Al by Ft Rucker - happened to be a 67 fastback with a 390 and a C6 - Before that was at Fontana, Ca every weekend with a Chebby 4 speed - Thanks again for the help - Bill

Bill,Enjoy your flashback! You'll have a great time. I'm heading out 'solo' tomorrow in my old heap, driving it to the track. Just like old times, btw my timing is locked out. SteveW
