I'm going to look at some parts and a car a man has for sale. He supposedly has a 428 cobra jet engine with a c6 to go with it. I was wondering if someone could give me the #s so i would be sure it is a cobra jet and not just a 428. also, what is a "freshly rebuilt" 428 cobra jet worth? thanks, steven leighty

It's not that simple. Go here and ask the question www.fordfe.com Do some searches first thoe. The casting numbers are not always 428. a good place to check is the back of the block. Look for a C that looks like a weld bead made it, Could be an A like is on my 428. Pull the oil pan and look for the extra webbing on the main bearing webbs. With run of the mill good stuff about $5,000 to $7,000 on the 428

On most FE`s, the casting #`s on the block don`t help much. As Glen stated, the best way to check is to pull the oil pan. A real 428 CJcrankshaft will normally be stamped 1UB at the #7 counterweight, a 428 SCJ will be 1UA, reg. 428`s are 1U. A real CJ will have rod nuts that are bigger than a 9/16`s socket, but a 5/8`s socket will be sloppy (the proper socket is 19/32`s"), SCJ will have capscrew LeMans rods, while the reg 428 uses 3/8" rod bolts, which take a 9/16`s" socket. The majority of CJ`s have head casting #C8OE-N (between the center spark plugs). Also, if the C6 is a correct CJ trans, it will have a cast iron tailhousing, plus the servo cover on the pass side will be marked "R". Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Well i went to look at the stuff today. the car is a mercury zephyr. Its tubbed(homemade) with a narrowed 9 inch, strange axles, new autometer 5inch tach. roll cage, ratchet shifter, line lock. It is in red primer and the bodywork is 99% done. all steel, no fiberglass. he has all the bumpers, lights, chrome... But the 428 scj was sold 2 days ago for $1000. He said its a 1970 motor out of a cyclone, so would it be a 428scj or a 429scj? he said both when he was talking to me. But anyway, would $600 be a good deal on the car? it has wheels and tires but they are an aluminum ranger wheel. he has slicks for the back but they are worn out. thanks, steven leighty
P.S. i'm going to try to buy the 428 or 429 off of the guy that bought it off of him tomarrow. he told me where he lives so i'm going to go offer some cash for it. so how much is a 429scj worth?

The car sounds like a killer deal if its well done.If you don't get one of the motors I'd just drop in a 460.

If it was out of a 70 Cyclone, it won`t be a 428 CJ, as they were only used in Mustangs & Cougars in 70. A 70 Cyclone could have come with either a 429 ThunderJet (base model), or a 429 CJ or SCJ, depending on gearing.

How good of a motor is a 429scj? What would a freshly rebuilt one be worth?
