I was told that you should set your valve lash when the engine is hot but it doesn't mention this on my spec. card it just says to set them at .22 so should set them at .20 if cold or warm engine up first and set according to the spec card?

If this is a new motor....... It'll require them to be checked again after a few good runs.... Is it a roller or flat tappet???------------------ Todd 71 Mav Grabber All orig 306 cu.in. Cast Iron heads. Carillo Rods.Best et. 10.71 @ 124 thru the mufflers.

Easiest thing to do is to set them a few thou tight cold, then start engine and get it up to operating temp. Pull 1 cover and set both valves on 1 cyl, eg # 1. Let the engine cool down and recheck the valves you have just set to see how much they change. Use that number and set valves cold after that. Problem with setting valves hot is especially with aluminum heads you have to be really quick to get them all the same because the heads are losing temp quickly. Room temp engine does not change temp at all while setting valves.

I always set mine cold. It's a chore to get my covers off, and then, with the stud girdle in place, setting lash isn't a picnic either. I was told by a reputable member of this forum that on an iron headed motor, they tighten up once the motor warms up. He claimed depending on the quality of springs and rocker arms, they will tighten up .001 to .003. Since I like to run mine "tight", I set them cold at what the card calls for "hot."

.022 cold will be fine Floyd, I always set mine cold as well. When they warm up the lash will tighten about .002 or so but nothing to worry about. Next time you have the covers off set them at .024 cold and see if your ET's change.

Setting my lash (hot) at .022 with aluminum heads on an iron block, they shrink to .017 when cold. I set the hot lash on one head as fast as I can, fire it up to get it back up to running temp, and set the other head. Like Mario said, aluminum heads shed heat very quickly.------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html
