It used to be 13.99 and quicker with slicks. I don't know if it has changed or not as it has been several years since I have been an NHRA member.

Glen, Here you go from the rule book;2.2 DRIVELINE Drive shaft loop required on all cars running 13.99 (*8.59) or quicker (except vehicles running 13.00 (*8.14) or slower cars equipped with street tires.) See General Regulations 2.4. General Regs. 2.4 describes the construction of the loop and that it has to be w/i 6"s of the front u-joint. SteveW

Thanks Kid I'm going to Somoa this week end and want to make sure that Loops are not required on a 12 second street car. I had to remove the loop when I installed the subframe connectors and subframe cage not much room with 3" pipes. I will install one soon but not befor this weekend.

Glen,Yeah with street tires you can go as quick as a 13.0 1/4mi. Don't worry, I can't imagine them crawling under your car to look. If they do you'll just have to slow it down a little. SteveW

Drive shaft loops are cheap and one of the most basic of safety devices.DON'T SCRIMP ON SAFETY!!!!! If you have ever seen someone pitch a drive shaft at speed you would be lining up to buy a loop. ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 "No such thing as a cam thats too big"

A couple of years ago, I "tested" my driveshaft loop at the launch pad; I'm sure my floorboards would of been beat all to HE!! if I didn't have one. Yeah, it was embaressing, and we had to pick up the remains of the U-joint off the track and push the car back off and away, but the loop did it's job. I would HATE MYSELF if someone who was standing by the fence was hurt from a piece of flying metal - even though the loop wouldn't of contained all the pieces, at least I (and the track owner) would know that I was following the rules........ I tested the loop in my Granada several years ago. But my U-joint let go on the 1-2 shift. It wasn't pretty. The loop did it's job, which was a good news, bad news kind of thing. Good news; the loop worked and kept the driveshaft from digging into the asphalt. Bad news; the loop worked causing the busted driveshaft to beat on the yoke hanging out the back of the trans as I tried to get stop, breaking the tailshaft housing, breaking the bellhousing almost all the way around, breaking the snout off the starter, and breaking one corner off the block.

In most cases, I think the U-joint breaks right on the starting line and doesn't cause so much carnage. In my case, I was already moving at a pretty good clip and didn't get stopped right away. I really had no idea what was going on. When I launched, it had a vibration, I remember thinking "what is that?". Then the shift lite came on and out of instinct I pulled it into second gear. At that exact point, it felt like the while car was coming apart. It actually felt like the rear end was trying to come out of the car it shook and bucked so badly. The rear view mirror fell off the windshield, and my fire extinguisher mount broke and it went flying out of it's mount. All I knew was I needed to get over next to the guardrail and get stopped. To top it off, it was 4th or 5th round of elims, and I tree'd my opponent badly.

Dangit KV!! I hate to hear when a car comes apart like that, but that was a funny story!! That was definately a learning experiance. That must have happened around '94 or '95. Since then, I keep a much closer eye on the condition of the u-joints.
