Why are the late 351w "Football head Rod Bolt" Truck Rods stronger than regular 351w rods? I Got some 351w truck rods from my machine shop and they are cleaned up and reconditioned with ARP bolts however some of the rod caps have the c9 casting number on them (Early Rod part number) while the rods themselves have the D6 number on them, Is this ok? please let me know thanks.

The rod with the football shaped heads are stronger because of the way the rod is cut to make a platform for the bolt head. The circular cut does not leave a place for a crack to form as the straight cut does.I have never seen a rod break at this location. But the circular cut is stronger. If the rods were reconditioned, I would not worry about mismatched casting numbers. Reconditioning means that the big end of the rod was machined to make the hole round. It is perfectly acceptable to put on different rod caps prior to the machining. John No matter how carefully I read these posts, I never spot a mispelled word until I post.
