I just bought an MSD stsrt Retard so that I can lock out my timing instead of using the internal weights in the Distributor. My question is has anyone here had any experience with locking out a mallory unilite? I've done a couple of factory distributors but never a Unilite. Can you just pin the plates with a machine screw? Thanks! JS

Mallory makes an advance curve change kit. Depending on your advacne mechanism, YT # 29014 or YL # 29015. Parts and whether it will lock out timing is not known. See page 50 of 57.....http://www.mrgasket.com/pdf/mallory_pdf/mal_distributors.pdf Or Email their Tech Support? http://www.mrgasket.com/MailDirect/helpdesk/forms/Mallory.asp

Thanks T bird I sent them an email. I'll run it like it is for now, that mod isn't a pressing issue. JS

Jerry, Don't know if this makes any difference, but I've had two Unilites in my coupe, both had different types of advance weights and mechanisms. Both were mechanical advance. The oldest had hardened rollers that the weights used as a guide, the rollers wore a groove in the weights and basically locked out the advance. The newer style has an external block to limit the travel of the advance. This style ought to be easy to lock out.Mike

Mike, thanks I hope I have the newer kind too! Maybe it won't be too much of a challenge. I'd jump right on it but I have other things more pressing to do right now. It will crank and run like it is. Thanks again for the heads up. any new pics of the 3 deuce set up ??? JS

T bird, I have an MSD but it won't clear the tunnel ram. I can't afford a $500.00 dollar offest drive. If I get a Magneto it may clear. Your right though it is a weak link. I don't like the unilites because the module will eventually fail. JS

Jerry,Get a Duraspark dizzy and a small cap with brass terminals. I ran this with no problems on the 557 with TR. The Ford module inside is identical to the MSD module in the way it works.

Doesn't MSD make a small cap dizzy that is designed to clear tunnelrams? I looked at getting one for my car when I contemplated using my tunnelram.

Do you know what year model these came off of? ( the duraspark) I think the clearance on the wieand is pretty tight, the unilite barely fits. I called MSD and asked about their stuff ( base diameter ) and what I wound up with was a recomendation to a fellow that makes offset drives. I am not going to spend $500.00 plus for a dizzy that approaches the cost of a good magneto which would fit. If you know of a part number that would fit run it by me I'll give it a whirl. JS

I just looked up the dizzy diameters MSD small cap = 4 3/4 diameterMallory Unilite = 3 1/2 with clips 4 " even and that's a tight fit. Duraspark? JS

Yep, I had the same problem on my 302 with an Offy Tunnel ram . I have an old Accel dual point in it that will hit the intake next to the themostat housing if you twist it too far so I have to "phase" it accordingly at least now Im going to switch to a small cap unilite.------------------ http://maverickgrabber.iwarp.com [This message has been edited by MAV (edited 08-07-2003).]
