Ok I purchased a 1991 H.O. motor from a salvage yard. The deal was just the shortblock for 150.00. Well, I thought I scored when the yard said after taking the intake off that they would include the heads for that price. I thought my luck was going for the better. WRONG!! After work tonight I pulled the heads and saw good useable bores for a re-ring. Then upon closer inspection, I noticed a crack in the lifter gallery. The crack goes from a water passage to the gallery about 3 inches long. So the block is junk. I think they kept the heads on to hide the crack but who knows?

Now for the question; How can I best recoup my money from this "learning experience"?

Would it be feasable to buy a new ford block from Jegs or Summit and install the stock crank, rods and forged pistons? How much are E7TE heads worth?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I would take it back and ask for another HO block or your $$ back.

I bought a block from a salvage yard, turned out to be cracked, I took it back, pointed out that the block was cracked, they told me to come back in two days and they had me another block.......

Yeah. Take it back. It's part of the business. They know it happens. They will give your money back........unless they are just plain, dirty, rotten, crooks.

I returned it. I thought they wouldn't take it back, but they did. Still out a motor though. Seems that 5.0 motors are like hens teeth here. Time is on my side here so I'll just keep looking. Thanks for the replies.

Just for information purposes the engine had a rusted out freeze plug with a tiny hole. It looked like the block cracked because it as filled with water and froze.
