As most of you guys know I finally got started on the 302 build. My ring gap is .014 and the book says I have to have at least .016. I am using hastings chrome moly rings. I have heard on a performance motor that tighter ring gaps make more power, but I don't want them to but, so should I leave them or file them?------------------ 1970 coupe restored with the help of my dad. 302 with 600 holley, aluminum intake, headers, pertonix ignitor 2 with matched coil, lakewood bellhousing, 4-speed toploader, and 2.79 open 8" rear. Is this strictly a race car or will it be used for street primarily? If street is the primary venue, then open the rings the couple thou. The amount of power gain by not opening them at our level won't be worth the risk of the end gaps butting together and damaging the cylinder walls and pistons.
