I have about 300 miles on a rebuild with my 428. I have used conventional 10W-40 valvoline for these miles. I have heard various opinions on when to change to synthetic.

I want to use royal purple but am unsure of when to change and what weight to use.

Any suggestions would be great.

I am sure there are many more informed opinions than mine, but I am unsure that the break in on conventional rule still applies. I know that many automobiles leave the factory with synthetic, some even void the warranty if you use anything but. I am sure that 99% of this depends on the ring set and wall finish. But like I said, others with more experience will comment and I look forward to the discussion.

I waited 1500 miles until going full synthetic. A 30w non-detergent break-in {change oil and filter}, 10-40 for 500 miles {change oil and filter}, then another 1000, then it's Royal Purple time

I'd think a minimum 500-750 miles to allow everything to seat in, but that's just a guess.

I've got close to 2500 miles on it now... the RP is worth every penny

TODD

Please explain to me all the benefits of using royal purple in my car. Mildly built 289, good runner with approximately 3000 miles on it. Is it worth using it on my car, how often should I change it, what are the benefits and draw backs of using this in my 289.

TIA

JOHN

John, I too was skeptical. But I thought, "I'll give it a try..."

WOW! How does 10-15 degrees lower operating temps and a kick-you-in-the-a** power increase grab you?

My motor is not a full-tilt racing engine, but it's by no means 'mild' The power increase and temp decrease are simply the result of less friction; the stuff is that effecient. For multi-viscosity 'street' formulas, Royal Purple claims that you can run it 12,000 miles
I'll take their word for it... I'll not run it nearly that long. The point is, the oil's lubrication/durability properties do not break down or deteriorate as petroleum based oils do. The filter traps contaminants so you change the filter, not the oil. Concidering I don't put but 2000-2500 miles a year on my car, a $50 oil change is cheap insurance.

Alex put it to me this way: 'How much is your motor worth?'

TODD,

Where can I buy the stuff and what weight royal purple should I use for my car. As usual Alex is correct, I wonder if he ever gets tired of being right, that is why I always listen to his advice.

Moneymaker Racing is a distributor of Royal Purple products!
I'd let Alex recomend a grade for your motor in your climate

It`s a long way for the stuff to come from Alex to me here in Canada, but you are right I will email him and find out which weight I should use. I did find a supplier here on vancouver Island and he will give it to me for $9.48 per liter ( quart ), sounds like a good price to me, but never having used it before I don,t know. What is your choice for oil filter?

what i do with synthetic oil in my daily driver is, i run it 5000 miles and change the filter and add a quart. then run it 5000 more miles and change all of it and start over. has worked great so far and the cost is about the same as regular oil.

Do you run the oil through some kind of external screen or filter after you drain it and before you re-use it? I will probably only put about 2000 miles per year on the car.

John,

On a driver you leave the oil in the pan, change the filter and add a quart that you lost in the filter. No screening required.

For your 2,000/year I'd just change it every year.
