For those of you that run or sell Royal Purple....

1. How many passes do you put on it before changing it?

2. Thinking about trying the lighter weights. What do you guys think? Which weight?

I running it in my 557 in the dragster. Saw an immediate mph increase that relates to some real hp gained. I'm running the Racing 51. Supposed to be similar to 20W-50. I went with that weight as the engine had always had Kendal 20W-50 in for the alky. I've got about 25 passes on the RP so far and the oil still looks good. I've cracked the drainplugs a couple of times and let a couple of tablespoons of condensation water out. The RP really seperates well from the water.

I'm thinking about a lighter weight, but not sure which one to try. If it matters the main clearances are .0028 and .0027 on the steel rods. Not sure of the side clearance. It also has oil restrictors and bushed lifter bores (passenger side only) to help with oil control. It holds 70 psi at cold idle, 65psi hot idle and 75 psi on a pass with the Racing 51.

Later,
David Cole

Dave, I think the Royal Purple 41 is recommended for use in alky. I'm not sure what it is though, but there is something different in the additives. Hope it helps. Randy

I know the #11 says it is good for alchy, and when I can afford it, that's what I use. However, for a motor the size of yours, I'm not sure something that lite (5-20) would be appropriate. When I do/did run it, I changed it about every 50-60 passes. It always looked good enough I took what I drained out and ran it in my old '83 Ranger I used to own. With my change interval I have now, I would probably not change it til I had around 75 passes on it. But, I'm sure the techs at RP would say that's too long to run it.

To go faster I would use #21 Dave.
I change mine every 25 passes or so.(#9)
You can go to 50 safely as long as you purge the water weekly. I have more clearance with steel rods.
