I measured the main clearences on my 351w with plastigauge and its a bit bigger than .002, and a bit smaller than .0015 , does that sound ok?

That's it Steve, the only way to go! I don't trust plastigauge one bit. The very fist engine I built, back when I was 16, I use plastigauge and it checked out OK. However, the crank kit wasn't matched with the bearings. The rod journals were cut .020 and they supplied .010 bearings. That was the last time I use it. Never again! I don't like doing the same job twice. Not for someone's elses mistake.

Plasti- gauge OK for street motor, low performance stock. Like your buddies 350 Chebbie. Mic anything you want to run, high performance, for example any FoMoCo built motors Plasti-guage is great for high school AG/Auto shop. check with your local parts store, sometimes you can rent or borrow stuff like that fairly reasonable. JS
