I am thinking of porting my C9 Windsor heads further, especially if I fit bigger valves (1.94/1.6) but am worried about going too far and hitting water. How can I keep tabs on port wall thickness to avoid breaking through or leaving it too thin. Please do not suggest 'better' heads, I am forced to use these (racing rules). Oh, and low buck is good!
Cheers, Martin.

Do the rules state that you must port them by hand?
Some companys can CNC port the heads, they do this by computer and they know from experience how far they can go.

These guys sell CNC ported 351W (C9) heads

I have been thinking about a set of those instead of expensive aftermarket heads. Not sure but I think i favour saving pennies a little longer and getting the aftermarket heads. Not an option for you though.

Thinnest area is down in the bowl. It's been awhile but I think it is the exhaust bowl and it is the wall either closest to the adjacent intake port or else the side directly opposite. From what I recall it is the wall that has a slight dogleg, therefore it's the area you're most likely to hog on so be careful!!

OK, thanks guys, I was sort of hoping you could steer me towards a tool or method of measuring the remaining thickness as I went along. Indyphil- I know about powerheads but the cost (esp. to the UK) makes it a bit unattractive. We can port any way we like so I think it's down to me!
Cheers, Martin.

The only real way to know is to Sonic check them as you go.... All castings will vary thickness wise. On mine I had a same casting cut in half and measured the thickness. Then ported away. I had them checked twice.
