I live in Illinois, and I did not think my '70 even had to go in for emmissions in this state. But a few months ago I had to bring it in as I was getting pestered by the state to do so. But when I completed the test, it was almost like a joke, my car passed by an amazing margin. Of course my car was totally stock at the time, but I don't want it to stay that way. I wonder if the state just makes the old cars do it for the hell of it and make the standards really low. So the question is, would some Edelbrock performer RPM heads make my car that much more pollutant? I mean there is such a wide margin I don't see how anyone could fail the test- and you can really smell the unburnt hydrocarbons in the exhaust of my car. One more thing to add, alot of mechanics that I know keep telling me my car is emmissions exempt here, and that I shouldn't of had to take my car in for it. Anyone else living in Illinois or a state with similiar standards care to comment? Paul

Edelbrock RPM heads shouldn't make much difference. It's large cams and bif holleys that make a real difference. Do you have to pass a visual test?

It is just a sniffer they put up to your exhaust at with the car at idle. They do not even do the simulated driving thing like they do with the new cars, where they put the car on the rollers. Paul

if they arn't laughing when you pull in, you need a bigger cam/less restrictive exhaust.I can just see some guy workin for the state seeing some pro-street car roll in for testing. it would be priceless

Here in Tennessee, larger counties have emissions sniff tests and the less populated counties don't.Funny story about emissions: My bone stock 1988 LX 2.3 four cylinder / automatic didn't pass the sniff test. (I have since moved to a county that doesn't require the test). My 1978 F-150 has a 1973 429 with 200,000 miles on it. This F-150 has a GVW over 6000 lbs so the emissions can be higher and still pass. This 1973 429 with 200,000 miles burned clean enough to pass the test that my 1988 four cylinder failed! The 429 has a Crane RV cam, Edelbrock intake, a Holley 600 cfm four barrel and headers. Tracy
