I would use two bolts to mount the bracket on aluminum heads. Some aluminum heads don't appear to have as deep of holes in them as their counter part cast iron heads.

What is the thickness of 16 gauge steel? Is that aprrox 3/16". Seems like 19 gauge is 1/8". If it is approx 3/16", it should be thick enough.

According to my Reference guide, 16 gauge steel is 0.0625" thick (US Standard Gauge) or 0.0598" thick (Manufacturers Standard); which is approximately 1/16" inch thick. 19 gauge is only 0.0437" (US Std) or 0.0418" (Manufacturers Std).

I think I'd want the torque strap to be something more like 3 gauge (1/4") total...

I'd also try to get the strap laying directly against the head; don't put 'umpteen washers on the head to build it out then use long bolts to fasten it....the lever action will likely bend the bolts or crack the treads at the head. If you can't get the torgue strap lined up satisfactorly, consider using solid motor mounts (holding the engine in the center) rather than using a strap on the end of the cyl head (holding the engine by a corner). The importance of the rigidity depends on the amount of HP you're making, and how hard you're hitting the chassis - whether you're using an auto or stick, slicks or street tires, etc.

Just my 2 cents,,,

oooops. I was thinking of 11 gauge (1/8") and typed the wrong thing.

The gauges listed won't be thick enough. I wouldn't use anything thinner than 11 gauge. I guess I am more prone to use something too thick than barely thick enough.

If you need to move it away from the head an inch or so, I have seen some guys use a modified 351W alternator mount that bolts to the head with two bolts.

You'd need a turnbuckle short enough that you could use a piece of flat stock (approx. 1.5" wide X 7" long X 0.25" thick) with two bolt holes to securely fasten it to the cyl head and a third hole just below the lower edge of the cyl head to clear the bolt used to secure the top of your turnbuckle to the flat stock.
