I'm curious if I need to replace my head gaskets after doing a piston to valve clearance check. I'd assume the heads should be torqued to spec to get the proper depth reading, but I'll need to remove the heads obviously to remove any clay, and may end up installing and removing them an additional time there after. This is all prep work, no fluids will be running, and the motor will not be started. The motor will be seeing some higher than stock compression levels, and may encounter nitrous in the upcoming months. Thanks for the input.

I know of guys who re-sue the Fel-Pro product.
I don't personally like Fel-Pro head gaskets so I don't use them.
I personally would not resue any head gasket that has already been torqued.

I like to keep an old used head gasket around for this purpose. It makes installing the head and removing it to do the P-V checking a lot less expensive.

Also, if you use an old gasket, you don't need to torque it to specs since it is already crushed. Just snug the head bolts down and spin the engine over with light weight checking springs on the valve(s).

You can also use a new gasket. If you don't torque it down, you will have to subtract a few thousandths from the clearance figure you obtain.

I have re-used head gaskets (Fel-Pro black) on my 460 w/ally CJ's when I had problems but once sorted I used a new set (expensive!) These are the only gaskets I found sealed the 460. For just checking PTVC, I don't use a gasket, so if it's OK without then there will be tons spare with a gasket. HTH
Cheers, Martin.
