This is just an idea that popped into my head & might be good to just "misfile" with all the work it could involve, Ok so we just bought a Fiberglass mid 70s Vanguard 15ft boat & it has no motor & I have been looking around for one, & just thought hmmm, I have my old 302 from my Cougar, & I know it would be pretty cool to have a 300 hp boat, but I dont know if I would need to build a boat around the V8 or what, any Ideas?

Is it an I/O, jet, or V-drive? Putting horsepower to water through an outdrive or jet pump, you lose alot

That's why you see so many big-block powered boats.

Marine engines are typically built with looser tolerances. Being cooled by river/ocean water, things tend to expand/contract at far different rates than they do under 'street' conditions. You'd best look into a marine carburetor and a fire system if the engine is sealed in an enclosure

I've always wanted to figure out if a transmission could be used on a boat. Say a 302/C-4 combo. Would be cool to have a boat with 3 forward ratios. . .

hey thumper i was always told marine engines were built to higher standards due to the fact that you are either idling or wide open, a friend told me that something like 1 in every 10 crankshafts will meet the specs to use in a marine engine. now i am curious to know this stuff!

Yes,

Some drag boats use powerglides. Two speeds are plenty, and as a side note they don't use torque converters. The prop slippage is enough of a fluid coupling.

Back in 1970, I scratch built a "Glen-L designed" V-drive 16' flat bottom ski boat. Initially, I put a 1968 302 (out of a mid size Ford) that had a totally stock bottom end. I had screw-in studs, guide plates, HP springs, and early non-rail rockers installed in the otherwise stock heads. We chose the Le-Mans solid lifter cam and a 600 Holley on an Edelbrock F4B intake. The V-drive shaft was adapted to the rear of the engine which ran only a C4 flexplate. The rear bell housing and front cover were aluminum marine pieces, and the water pump ran directly off the cam shaft. This basically stock 302 ran great with no problems. There was no consideration or special adjustments because it was in a boat (other than a flame arrestor on the carb). A couple of years later, I built a new 351W (to the top Muscle Parts specs) and installed it in the boat. There were many SBC and BBC powered boats that saw the transom of that combination. This engine ran for over 10 years with no issues other than it should have had brass freeze plugs put in at the beginning. The 302 had been in storgae a few years when it was installed in a 19' classic speed boat where it performed great.
