Buck,Don't know of any hp/tq dyno comparisons but the fact is that they rang in this order from worst to best. Cast Iron manifold shorty headers long tube headers Probably 30-100 h.p. difference from worse to best, depending on what engine is trying to exhaust it's gases out of the manifolds. SteveW

shorty give you more upper hp but long tubes offer a smother torque curve from the lowend on up..Bruce

From the advise from this forum, I have disassembled my engine again and it is in the shop to be O-decked for the obvious reasons. Engine specs are: D1VE block O-decked TRW forged pistons L2404-19cc dish 460 crank kit ARP rod bolts, moly rings bored .060 0ver for 472ci D3 heads milled .050 Guides & hardened exhaust seats SS valves 2.25 int / 1.75 exh Screw in studs & guide plates 3/8 push rods & roller tip rockers port matched intake ported exhausts & exhaust bumps removed Stealth 8012 intake 8 qt oil pan hi-v oil pump & ARP oil pump shaft windage tray C6 w/2400 stall Cam specs: 236 int / 240 exh , 562 int / 588 exh. C/R should be around 9.5:1 The car is a 73 Mach 1 on jack stands with no exhaust or headers. It?s been sitting in storage since 1979 so it will need restoration of brakes, suspention,& drive train. Couple years work probably. The whole reason I ask about headers is the engine shop will be breaking in & dyno testing it and I don?t know what headers to use . I also could use a lot of help on what distributor, ignition or carb to use. The long tubes on a 73 Mach at a show I went to, looked to be just inches off the ground. They were Super Comps. Doubt if it would make it over a speed bump. I was wondering what kind of HP I would lose by using Shortys. I know It?s not a drag car but I want to get the best out of what I have in this engine combo and in a 3800 lb. Car. Any suggestions on these items will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Buck BTW : My Dad gave me the car, as long as I fixed it up and promised to keep it.

Shorty's won't give you sh*t. Just a cut above manifolds. Go with long tubes or don't wate your time and money unless it is going to be a show car.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 First SS/MA in the TENS! Buck, I wonder what OTHER changes were made to that '73 to cause the headers to hang soooo low...was the suspension lowered?...did it have low profile tires? Hooker Super Comps are usually top shelf when it comes to nice fitment. I guess I'd also have to ask what are YOUR plans for YOUR car; will it be a daily driver or a weekend street cruiser/show car; will you be running exhaust pipes & mufflers? Will you lower your suspension or use low profile tires? If so, then I'd say that you'd not realize the difference between the shortys or long tubes and the clearance would be more of an issue than if you were building a trailered drag car that doesn't need to drive over RR tracks, sloped driveways and drive-ins. If your plan is to build it up to a trailered drag car with open headers that you're looking for every HP you can muster, then I'd go with some Super Comp long-tube headers and just live with whatever clearance your car gives you.... Just my 2 cents,,,,,,, Ryan [This message has been edited by Ryan Wilke (edited 07-14-2003).]
