I think you already found what the difference is between manual and auto starters! The nose for the manual is shorter, to keep the bendix away from the ring gear when the engine is running. Sounds like you bought a starter for an auto. You could just change the nose (ally part) over from a dead manual starter to make yours work. HTH

yes it probably hasen't been apart since it left the assy line back in 1968 and the workers droped the 289" in there.
Is the manuel starter nose longer than auto starter or the other way??

I think you need to start measuring distances where the problem is, like the distance from the flexplate teeth to the plate where the starter bolts to. Rotate the engine and check it is constant (not warped). Compare this with the starter nose assy and esp. the bendix teeth. Your answer should be there somewhere. HTH

the small blosk auto starter and FE are suposed to be the same , so I compared my auto starter to 390" starter and they measure the samefrom flange face to tip ,so is manuel shorter or longer than auto????

I answered this question for you already (see above). Manual nose is shorter than auto. You did not do as I suggested and measure the problem area, so you may not find the problem. I am trying to help you but you must help yourself.
