I have a guy trying to sell me a new set of aluminum cj heads with valves. How much $ are they worth? What kind of hp/torques improvement will these make over my Dove C's? (I'm running 429/.30 over/Weiand Stealth/Holley 850)

depends on their condition. Are they the old style or the latest model from Ford Racing? The new ones are supposed to be MUCH improved. I gave $800.00 for a set of used ones with valves, but I think I got an exceptional deal. I couldn't use the valve springs that came with it though. I did re-use the valves ( manley )
Check Summit's prices and go from there.
It would depend on your cam, headers, compression etc.. on how much it would help you. Typically, bigger ports help bigger cams, and move the RPM power band upward. it would be worth a few lbs. off the front of the car too.

Thanks! The cam's a fairly mild hydraulic Comp Cam, I have roller rockers and I have 1 7/8 primary headers. They are the old style, but brand new. Any guess on what a "smokin" deal would be or hp/torque gains. I'm only trying to see if I want these and I promise not to torture you if you are wrong.

need more info, what size valves you have now, what is the combustion chamber size of both sets of heads. My thoughts are this the aluminum ones have the POTENTIAL to be the better heads. They are lighter can be machined easy and fixed easy. Much easier to port match them to an intake. Will they outperform the DOOE's? probably but it may not be enough for you to notice, UNLESS you port match them to your intake, install bigger valves etc. The port area would be bigger on the aluminum ones when compared to the DOOE's ( unless they are SCJ's ) My guess would be about 15-30 HP. I know that's not too optimistic. Now if you said you were going to stick a tunnel ram or a victor JR to go WITH the heads, to take advantage of the larger port area, THEN I'd say yeah your gonna see 65 HP or so. ONE thing to remember is this your engine may not LIKE a higher RPM operating range without a cam, convertor, rear gear swap. Genereally, from a flow stand point, the PI iron heads are great for the street. You may want to take this question to the 385 series engine forum. Here is the link.
