All you slush box guys will love this one Aside from canning my Centerforce (diaphragm) clutch in favor of a long style, what can I do to my T-10 4 speed to improve shift speed, especially above 5500 rpm? I've tried several different weights of gear oil, even tried synthetic. I'm saving my pennies for a Jerico, but that's a big pile of pennies Any tips or tricks? ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

Is that an original T10? I'm not up on the 4 speed stuff but a guy I work with used to blow those things up on a regular basis with his 289. (we're talking mid 70's here) Went with a stock toploader and never had any more problems. I can bang gears in my toploader equipped torino with no issues (just the driver sometimes missing the 2nd to 3rd shift) Come to thing of it... when my brother first bought that torino... it had a 289/T10 combo in it. You couldn't bang gears to save your life with that thing!------------------ '68 mustang 351 clevor- 10.92@124 '67 Stang, 351W -11.18@118 '69 351C Torino-14.90@100 '78 Pickup 351W-15.56@88 '79 Pickup 460 ET=??

It's an iron case T-10... the better of the B/W 4 speeds, but still. I'm looking to improve on what I've got until I can put a serious transmission in this car. No power shifts right now, I don't want to hurt this rare gearbox. I'm going to drop this trans out this week, tear it down and have a look. It's not having any serious problems, just dosen't want to shift quick under WOT. Am I chasing a clutch problem?------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

You've probably rounded the (dog) teeth on the gears where the synchro slides over them. Not much you can do short of replacing them.

I agree with Tbird. If the synchros are wore down or chipped that's probably the biggest thing preventing a clean shift.

Pull the cover and take a gander inside. If the little teeth are burred, they can be deburred. You need to take it all apart to avoid getting grit inside. Using a small stone on a die grinder you make the teeth into a "V" shaped point again. The synthetic should allow for fast shifts if the tranny is OK and the clutch is not dragging.

Thanks guys, great info as always TomP- these 'burred' teeth; on the synchro blocking ring itself, or the slider? ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

Even though this is an input shaft, it shows the teeth that are similar on each gear that TomP is talking about.... See the small 'pointed' teeth next to the angled cut larger teeth? These are the ones the synchro meshes with during a gear change. Since the TL is fully synchronized, the input shaft has them also. See the smaller teeth on the outer ring of this 3-4 synchro? These are what meshes with the teeth similar to those on the input shaft for the other gears. These might be burred also. But, I would bet you have a problem similar to what I had in my old 70 Mustang with a TL. The small teeth were is such bad shape from missed gears by the previous owner, they eventually stipped off one night on a power shift. [This message has been edited by Tbird (edited 07-01-2003).]
