I know our track is not the best but I am have a hard time getting my car to hook consistantly and it cost me first round friday night.
68 mustang @3200 with driver usually 60 ft @1.73 runs 8.20's
It has sub-frame connectors, CE adjustable drag shocks 90/10 50/50, SSM lift bars, and 28x10 Hoosiers slicks.
Any thought, ideas, or suggestions on how to get it to hook better and more consistantly

Jerry,

I fought the same thing with slapper bars. The rear of the car would rise initially and if the track was real sticky the tires would bite and lift the front transfering weight to the slicks and it would 60' well. But, many times the track wasn't good enough and the slicks would break loose before the weight transfer occured.
Anyway to make a long story short, the solution is Cal-Tracs, monoleaf springs, and Rancho shocks. The springs and Rancho shocks reduce rear body seperation, and the Cal-Tracs move the car's instant center forward. The car will launch with one motion instead of two, and the vulnerable period when the rear is rising is eliminated.

But Steve you car runs what like 6.70's in the 1/8th or faster. Springs, shocks, & Cal-tracs that all seems a bit excessive for my low budget bracket car. Just thought their would be some slightly cheaper alternatives for my low 8 second ride.

Jerry,

Have you clamped your springs yet?
Video tape the car launching and see if it is spinning the slicks once in a while at the initial hit.

Have you added balast in the right rear corner of your trunk yet? That's cheap and works well. Mike uses a spare full of water, that's a good one too.

Jerry, What tire pressure are you running in your slicks? I had a lot of trouble til I found the right pressure. too much and It wouldnt hook, too little and I'd skate around on top end.

I ran 10 1/2 #'s last year, went up to 11#'s this year and My car is much more consistent on 60'.

We also run an air bag on the right side back wheel with about 8-10#'s .

No balast have been think about trying that but haven't yet. I have been running 13lbs in my slicks. I have been doing short hazing type burnouts went a little longer the other night seemed to help some.

Those 60' times seem somewhat in-line for your ET's. Is the issue wheel spin? Or are the tires sticking but the car's inconsistent?

How old (worn) are your slicks? I spent alot of time trying to get an old set to hook, then when I finally got a (still used!) better set that was the same size and make, I jumped about .4 in ET! I think a few months ago I posted some of the stuff I did to make my slapper bars work. Might be somewhere in the archives. I had decent 60' times at 1.52 with 60 series Goodrich DOT drag radials. Keep workin at it

Also,

Make the front suspension really lose. Lube everything especially the bushings. Lower your spring perches to extend front end upward travel. For ballast we use three 25# bags of lead shot and the battery in the trunk.

Just hazing the M/T slicks probably isn't enough. Let them smoke for a couple seconds.

We use little 10-26 et drags on the '66 with 14 psi in them. We get the slicks up to 175-200 degrees after the burnout when the track temp is under 110 degrees, too much according to M/T but it works for us. Do less of a burnout on a hot greasy track.

Good luck,

SteveW
