Pulled the 428 FE to check the bearings. #3 main bearing (Clevite) had worn to the backing and cut into the crank on the thrust surface toward the rear of the engine. Otherwise all the bearings looked reasonable. What could have caused this? It has a C6 with 5000 stall. Very few miles on the engine. Thanks for any ideas. I'm stumped. Planning on trying FM bearings.

My understanding is that the converter balloons and pushes forward on the crank which causes thrust wear.

Yep,

Ben's right the converter balloons and pushes the crank forward causing the wear on the thrust bearing. 99% of the time anyway.

Thanks for the info. Does that mean the converter is defective?

Did the converter have clearence when you first put it in? With the converter all the way into the tranny, should be 1/8 in. of clearence before you bolt it up, 3/16 max

I'm pretty sure it had a bit of clearance. We had just changed from a 10 inch converter recently and I recall the converter moving forward a bit when tightening the nuts on the studs. Don't recall if the 10 inch converter had fore/aft clearance though. The 10 inch converter always seemed really tight compared to the rated stall if that makes a difference. The trans and both converters were by A-1.

Any signs of balloning of the converter, lumps, paint discolored, burnt fluid, did the stall change any over the time you were running it? Also check the hub where it goes into the tranny to see if it was grinding into the pump, if it was, could be metal floating around in your tranny.

Roger thanks for the tips on what to look for. Everything seemed ok. Hopefully there will be no problem with the 8 inch in there. Will get the crank fixed and put the 428 in storage and bolt in the spare 427 once the new FM bearings come in from Summit. Thanks again.
