I am buying a 89 5.0 out of a f150 off my cousin and I was wondering if the 1960's parts will fit such as cam, rods, intake. I am thinking of using the 89 crank and I was wondering what type of quality the rods are in the 5.0. thanks, steven leighty

All parts will physically fit and many parts will interchange.
The early engines are of the 28 oz balance and the late ones are 50 oz.
Cam is a hydraulic roller in the late engine.
Rods are good in the late engine.
Carb intakes fit fine.
Cranks are very light.

The truck motors didnt get the roller cam but the block is the same as a roller one, there are two bosses that need to be drilled and tapped to drop in roller stuff. So you can use either type cam.

What about the heads? would they be worth using or should I use the set of 65 289 "b" code heads I have in the basement?

I would use the early heads for the smaller combustion chambers.

I don't think the light truck got rollers until 1990. Remember, there are (were) two 5.0's...HO and non-HO.

You also have the problem of a one and two piece rear main seal also (1985).

1986 for sure. Post 1-07-86 build dates on light truck.
I saw hundreds of them in our service dept over the years. There were serious lifter noise issues in 1986 with both HO and non HO roller engines..
I don't want to debate it either.
It's in the FoMoCo service manuals and on SBDS and TSB's etc.
