What are the proper steps in claying an engine?

TC,

First degree the camshaft, then assemble the #1 piston, and put 1/8" of clay on the #1 piston. Put the head on the left bank over #1 w/o a gasket. Tighten the head bolts around #1. Drop in the lifters for #1 and pushrods. Assemble the rockers on #1 and set the valve clearance, (assuming solid lifters) If you're running juice lifters you'll have to take one of the old ones apart and make it solid with washers etc. Then turn the engine over a couple turns and remove the heads. Measure the minumum thickness of the clay. I use an exacto knife and slice the clay at its thinnest point and measure it with calipers. Add the compressed thickness of the head gasket you'll be using and you have the piston-valve clearance.
