I don't really know of many downfalls to it once you get the carb bought. It does take longer to warm up, and it usually will need primed with gas the first time you start it everyday. But once it get's some heat in it, it will start right up without the gas. If you keep the motor warm, the oil doesn't need changed any more often than when on gas. I try to keep my water temp around 180* after a pass. I stage aaround 170*, and when I get to the trailer it's usually around 180-185*, and I just shut it and the fan and water pump off. And at the end of the night before I shut it off, I prefer it to be around 190-195* to help evaporate the condensation out of the oil.
I had a mild motor that in my car was running mid 11.20's on gas. I pulled the gas carb off, drained the cell, filled the cell with alchy, bolted my alchy carb on, and without changing plugs or timing, first pass it ran 10.82.
I like it, and wont ever go back to gas. Not at least for a bracket car. I like making a pass and knowing I can pull right back to the lanes without having to "cool it down". I like knowing it will run the same ET if the motor is at 160* when I stage as it will when the motor is at 180*. It sure makes it nice knowing I can sit there all day without it getting hot. With my fans and water pump on, it can idle till the cell runs dry when it's 100* outside and it wont get over 180*.
